Introduction

Purpose of Training

Safe and efficient construction in our communities requires a high calibre of expertise among municipal building officials, builders, design professionals and other Building Code users.  Keeping up-to-date on the Building Code also promotes building safety and efficient construction within the province.  Those involved in the enforcement of the Building Code Act and Regulations as well as people involved in the design and supervision of construction must also keep abreast of new techniques and current Building Code requirements.

The objective of the the Ministry's Building Code training courses is to ensure consistency and accuracy in Building Code interpretation and compliance.

Training Course Offerings

The Building and Development Branch of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing produces Building Code courses and workshops in cooperation with the Ontario Building Officials' Association and other organizations.

Courses generally follow a facilitated/workshop format geared toward adult learners.  While the Ministry develops training materials, course delivery is left to authorized delivery agent.  Some courses are also offered in a self-study format.

There may be admission requirements for the course you choose.  The Branch's courses are designed assuming that the participants have the prerequisite knowledge to begin the course. In some cases, the prerequisite knowledge is contained in other courses which should be completed before you begin your chosen course. If you choose not to take the pre-requisite course, you should have acquired the knowledge through other means. Consult the course descriptions for any pre-requisites.

Types of Technical Training

The Branch offers two types of technical training courses:  Overview Courses and Detailed Technical Training Courses.

Overview Training Courses

These courses are intended to provide an overview of Code Concepts and refresh Building Code skills of experienced practitioners.  They are also intended to assist experienced Code users prepare for the Ministry’s Building Code qualification examinations:
